Bacterial populations and adaptations in the mucus layers on living corals1

چکیده
The external mucus layers of the stony coral Porites astreoides and the soft corals Palythoa sp. and Heteroxeniu fuscesens are inhabited by communities of marinc heterotrophic bacteria. Population levels of bacteria in coral mucus may be regulated by the self-cleaning behavior of the host. Bacterial populations in coral mucus respond to stresses applied to the host coral by growing to higher population levels in the mucus, indicating that these are populations of viable organisms closely attuned to host metabolism. IMembers of these microbial populations utilize the mucus compounds and may play a role in processing coral mucus for reef detritus feeders. One such species, Vibrio ulginolyticus, grows rapidly on Heteroxeniu mucus, is attracted to dissolved mucus, and possesses a mechanism to maintain itself on the

Effect of different levels of Lactobacillus acidofilus as a probiotic on the anti-bacterial activity of mucus and non-specific immune of mucus in Tiger Barb (Puntius tetrazona)
Fish epidermal mucus and its components provide the first defense line against pathogens. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of Lactobacillus acidophilus on antibacterial activity, MIC and some immune parameters of mucus in Puntius tetrazona. Six hundred and thirty fish (0.5 ± 0.03 g) were randomly distributed in 9 aquarium for 3 treatments with 3 replicates (n...
متن کاملThe structural adaptations of Convolvulus persicus, an endangered plant in the northern coasts of Iran
The purpose of this research was to identify the structural adaptations in three populations of Convolvulus persicus L. on coastal areas in Mazandaran Province, whose populations of which are severely reducing due to the intense environmental stresses of the coastal zone. In general, annular collenchyma, isobilateral mesophyll, amphiphloic siphonostele, abundant presence of laticiferous tubes, ...
متن کاملMucus trails in the rocky intertidal: a highly active microenvironment
The significance of mucus trails derived from the herbivorous gastropods Patella caerulea, Monodonta turbinata and Tegula sp. in enhancing microbial activity in marine rocky intertidal and sublittoral zones was investigated by means of microcosm and field experiments. A pronounced increase of bacterial abundance concurrently with extracellular glucosidase activity (alpha-Dand betaD-glucosidase)...
متن کاملLactobacillus reuteri Maintains a Functional Mucosal Barrier during DSS Treatment Despite Mucus Layer Dysfunction
Treatment with the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri has been shown to prevent dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in rats. This is partly due to reduced P-selectin-dependent leukocyte- and platelet-endothelial cell interactions, however, the mechanism behind this protective effect is still unknown. In the present study a combination of culture dependent and molecular based T-R...

One hundred and thirty specimens of faeces of infants under one year old suffering form gastroenteritis and residing at the Camp of Iraqi Kurdish refugees (Paveh and Sar Pol Zahab cities) were collected and evaluated from the point of some bacterial agents. At the same time, some importantc1inical findings and environmental conditions were also collected for the study. The results showed th...
